AGM 2006

The 2006 SFF/BSFA AGM Event will take place on Saturday 13th May from 10am to 5pm in Conway Hall, 25 Red Lion Square, London WC1R 4RL. The SFF AGM will be 1400-1430. Announced guests for the event are Bruce Sterling and Stephen Baxter. The line up for the day is as follows:

Hugo Awards

The Science Fiction Foundation congratulates all the winners of this year's Hugo Awards.. Among the British recipients were Susanna Clarke (Best Novel), Charlie Stross (Best Novella), Sue Mason (Best Fan Artist), and the Plokta Cabal (Best Fanzine). The award for Best Related went to the previous and current editors of Foundation, Edward James and Farah Mendlesohn and the other contributors to the Cambridge Companion to Science Fiction.

Bursary Awarded

We are pleased to announce that first recipient of a Science Fiction Foundation bursary is Geetha B. from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India. Geetha is studying philosophical themes in the work of Arthur C Clarke. We wish her well in her studies.

Aldiss Honoured

In the Queen's birthday honours list this year, Brian Aldiss was appointed OBE for services to literature.

Many congratulations to Brian, whose services to SF have been appreciated by us for many years!

Arthur C. Clarke Award 2005

On 11 May China Miéville won the 2005 Arthur C. Clarke award for Iron Council. The SFF would like to offer their congratulations.

A couple of weeks earlier, SFF and Serendip came to an agreement by which SFF will fund up to £1000 of the cost of the Award Ceremony for each of the next five years. SFF is pleased to continue to support the Clarke Award and we look forward to continuing to work alongside Serendip and the BSFA to raise sponsorship for it.

Andre Norton 1912-2005

The SFF join with the rest of the SF community in mourning the passing of Andre Norton, sf and fantasy writer who inspired many to enter the field as both readers and writers.

Blog!

SFF's own Farah Mendlesohn has started up a science fiction related blog, The Inter-Galactic Playground. Farah describes it as a web site dedicated to children's literature and particularly children's science fiction. She is also soliciting information from interested parties via a questionnaire at http://sfquestions.blogspot.com/

The SFF website is being updated in order to make it easier to access information. During the make-over there may be some glitches but we hope to have them ironed out as quickly as possible.
